Case Study: Helping HEB Stay Ahead of EPA Compliance

In 2019, HEB faced challenges with outdated refrigeration systems leaking R12 and R22 refrigerants - making them a potential target for EPA scrutiny under the Chronically Leaking Appliances Rule. Recognizing the risks, HEB took decisive action.

Solution: HEB partnered with Lowe Rental to replace these chronically leaking systems with self-contained R290 reach-in refrigeration cases. This proactive approach eliminated the need to report these appliances to the EPA, drastically reducing compliance risks.

Results:

  • No further EPA reporting required for replaced systems.
  • Rapid transition to compliant refrigeration solutions.
  • Minimal business disruption during the upgrade process.

Since then, HEB has continued to focus on modernizing their refrigeration infrastructure, using rental solutions to quickly address compliance issues,  while keeping costs under control When stores that received self-contained rental units are up for a remodel or expansion, the rental cases stay to support the remodel and are then moved to the next needed project.
